So-Cal band The Millennial Club geared up to release an infectious EP ‘When It’s Just You & I.’ The EP touches on many different topics and subjects, but most of the tracks are presented within their signature sound – an 80’s pop and 90s R&B infused identity. The vocal melodies are infectious and ebb and flow within the synth drenched pop and exuberant backdrop supported by its beat-driven foundations. Uncertainty of love, broken promises, and the beauty found in small, intimate moments often overlooked in today’s age are all tackled through the band’s atmospheric pop lens.

Hitswave‘s team had the chance to have a chat with them for the occasion – to discuss the track, music, upcoming releases, and more… Enjoy!

Hi guys, thanks for your time! Can you tell us how the band came to be and the reason behind the name?

Andres and I (Jared) began working on music together in 2016 after hearing a clip of a song that I posted to Snapchat. He asked if he could sing over it, and the rest is history. We eventually had a few songs written out and realized we would need more people to play live with. That’s when we asked Jake, who was also a high school friend of ours, to join the band. Now honestly, the name of the band ended up as an idea of mine based off a few different names that Andres and I had come up with. The “millennial” part of our name is because we’re obviously millennials (albeit late millennials), and the “club” part is because we’re Bombay Bicycle Club fans, so we thought it’d be really cool to be a part of some sort of club.

You’ve just released your EP ‘When It’s Just You & I’. What’s the story behind it?

To start, we first decided we wanted this EP to incorporate more of our electronic sound, which is which is why we chose “When It’s Just You & I” as the title track. Originally, we only had a few different songs that we thought would fit well in the EP, but we ended up making a few changes. “xx” and “sleepless” were the ones that made it from the beginning. Then, Andres showed us a sample of an idea he had come up with that we had forgotten about which ended up being “hold you again”. Lastly, we decided we wanted to try and start a brand new song from scratch, which ended up being the title track. I think we realized that “When It’s Just You & I” was what really summed everything up – hence the name of the EP.

You like to blend different genres to create your own signature sound. How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard of The Millennial Club?

The answer to this question always changes in wording, but essentially, we tend to mix genres like pop, rock, funk, electronic, and R&B. Some describe our music as “sunny and beachy” SoCal music; others would refer to our sound as “driving music”.

What is your most memorable gig as a performer?

Ugh – it’s been so long since we’ve played, but my most memorable gig would probably have to be when we played at House of Blues Anaheim (I think it was when we opened for Charlotte Lawrence). It was just really cool because I remember the crowd interaction being super intimate, and we also had a lot of friends and family there, so it felt special.

What’s your dream collaboration?

Andres: probably The Japanese House, tbh

Jake: Beatenberg!!!

Jared: A dream producer collaboration for me would be either D’Mile or John the Blind.

What can we expect for the rest of 2022?

More music is coming. And who knows … maybe some shows? We’ll keep you posted.

Quick bonus question – What would you do if you weren’t a musician?

Andres: probably a software engineer

Jake: I imagine I’d be some kind of industrial engineer

Jared: I’d probably try out Twitch streaming
